Pakistan vs Bangladesh Champions Trophy

The two eliminated teams of Group A will look to end their ICC Champions Trophy campaign on a high, as Pakistan host Bangladesh on Thursday. This is match #9 of the Champions Trophy and is to be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi from 2:30 pm IST.

Both teams are knocked out already, after losing to India and New Zealand, respectively. The only consolation for the teams is a win in a tournament that didn’t really see them flourish. Bangladesh’s poor batting gives a slight edge to Pakistan, and I am backing the hosts to end the tournament with a win.

  • Pakistan won their last 3 completed matches against Bangladesh (ODIs).
  • Pakistan won all 12 completed home matches against Bangladesh (ODIs).
  • Bangladesh lost their last 6 matches (ODIs).
  • Bangladesh lost 16 of 18 matches they played in Pakistan (ODIs).

Head to Head

Pakistan has played Bangladesh in just 39 ODIs so far, winning 34 and losing just five.

The last time these sides played against each other was in the 2023 ODI World Cup, when Pakistan won by seven wickets. Mahmudullah’s 54 was the only bright spot for Bangladesh as they posted 204 all out in 45.1 overs. Shaheen Shah Afridi took 3 for 23.

The chase was led by Fakhar Zaman (84), with Abdullah Shafique (68) proving to be an adequate ally. The target was chased in 32.3 overs.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan are hosting an ICC tournament for the first time since 1992, and they are out of it in the group stages itself. That’s because of their defeats against New Zealand and India.

Against the Kiwis, it was a 60-run comprehensive defeat that hurt their chances. They could score only 260 in response to 320. It was a similar downfall against India, losing by six wickets, after scoring only 241.

The biggest worry for the hosts is the lack of intent at the top, with Babar Azam (SR 75), Mohammad Rizwan (SR 53.84), and Saud Shakeel (SR 71.57) struggling to get going. Only Khushdil Shah (107 runs, SR 121.59) has been battling hard for the Green Caps.

The bowlers have been struggling too, with Shaheen Afridi (two wickets, ER 7.88) a big disappointment. Only Abrar Ahmed (ER 3.75) has exhibited a bit of control.

Pakistan Team News

With only pride to play for, Pakistan may look to draft Kamran Ghulam and Usman Khan to refresh their struggling batting unit.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh are only marginally above Pakistan in the points tally, thanks to a better NRR, but they were poor too. Defeats to India (six wickets) and New Zealand (five wickets) hastened their exit.

The Bangladeshis struggled with batting collapses in both their matches. They were 35 for 5 against India before posting 228, while New Zealand kept taking wickets regularly to restrict them to 236.

Much like their hosts, the top order let Bangladesh down. Only Jaker Ali (113 runs) and Towhid Hridoy (107 runs) scored fluently, with the latter scoring their only century in this tournament.

Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain (3 wickets, ER 5.0) impressed, but the lack of penetration from senior pros Mustafizur Rahman (ER 5.47) and Mehidy Hasan (zero wickets) hurt them the most.

Bangladesh Team News

Nasum Ahmed and Soumya Sarkar may get a game in place of Tanzid Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman.
