- India vs Australia Champions Trophy FAQs
India have a massive advantage over others, not just in terms of pitches but also in logistics. Australia have had to come early to Dubai to have an extra practice session, as they didn’t know their opponent until Sunday! Australia may be handicapped because of this, and I am backing India to win here.
- India won their last 6 matches (ODIs).
- India won 8 of their 9 matches played at this venue, with the other ending in a tie (ODIs).
- Australia lost 4 of their last 5 completed matches (ODIs).
- Shreyas Iyer has scored 40 or more in 5 of his last 6 matches (ODIs).
Head to Head
India played Australia in 151 ODIs so far, winning only 57. Australia won 84 matches, while 10 ended without any result. The last time these sides met was in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup final.
It was a memorable evening for the Aussies, en route to winning the trophy. The bowling heroes from that match aren’t playing here for Australia, but the devastating Travis Head poses a big threat for India.
India Form
India topped the Group A points tally, with three wins out of three. All their matches were played at this venue, which is an advantage compared to their visitors and all other teams in the tournament.
The Men in Blue defeated Bangladesh (six wickets), Pakistan (six wickets), and New Zealand (44 runs). Leading India’s plans for the tournament is middle-order bat Shreyas Iyer (two 50+ scores), while Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli have one 100+ score.
With the ball, it is the spinners who have been exceptional for the Men in Blue. Varun Chakaravarthy (5 or 42) tricked the batters on Sunday, while Kuldeep Yadav (five wickets) has been steady.
India Team News
India could be tempted to use four spinners against the aggressive Australian side.
Australia Form
Australia also remained unbeaten in the tournament, although they had two of their games washed out. They finished second in Group B behind South Africa with four points from one win and two no results.
The current World Champions started the tournament with a five-wicket win over England. Their next match against South Africa was abandoned without a toss, while their last match against Afghanistan saw them smash 109 for 1 in just 12.5 overs while chasing 274.
The sample size is small to judge how the Aussie players have played in this tournament, but Josh Inglis scored their lone individual century. Alex Carey, Travis Head, and Matthew Short scored fifties. With the ball, Ben Dwarshuis took three wickets in both matches, while Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa have been impressive.
Australia Team News
Australia’s last match was in Lahore, where the conditions were vastly different. They may choose to bring in Tanveer Sangha, replacing Spencer Johnson.

Verdict
India have a variety of spinners to test Australia and maximise the conditions. While Australia poses a threat on their day with the likes of Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, and Josh Inglis, along with Steve Smith match winners in their own right, it is India who have an edge. I am backing them to win here and reach the final.
