After losing their opening games, albeit in contrasting styles, Afghanistan and England have very little margin to play for. The loser is definitely out of the tournament, while the winner will only be clinging to their hopes dearly. Although the Afghans have the right bowling attack to make a splash, England seems to have that edge to win.
- Afghanistan lost their 2 matches they played at this venue (ODIs).
- Afghanistan lost 5 of 6 matches they played against England in white ball cricket (ODIs & T20Is).
- England won 5 of their last 8 matches in the ICC Champions Trophy (ODIs).
Head to Head
Afghanistan vs England isn’t a celebrated rivalry, although the Asians had their moment when the sides last met in the ODI World Cup. That remains their only win in three head-to-head ODIs.
That match in Delhi saw Afghanistan score 284 with Rahmanullah Gurbaz (80) and Ikram Alikhil (58) scoring at will. Adil Rashid (3 for 42) impressed with the ball for England. The chase was never on, although Harry Brook (66) did his best to take England over the line.
Afghanistan Form
Afghanistan started the tournament with a 107-run loss to South Africa in Karachi last Friday in the third match of this competition. The heavy loss meant their NRR stays negative at 2.140.
That was an inauspicious start for the Afghans, who were making their debut in this tournament. Their bowlers struggled to keep South Africa under check, conceding 315 runs in the 50 overs. Rashid Khan went wicketless (0 for 59) while only Mohammad Nabi (2 for 51) could get multiple wickets.
The chase was snuffed out early with the score reading 50 for 4 and 120 for 6. The Afghans finished with 208, and that’s largely due to the efforts of Rahmat Shah (90).
Afghanistan Team News
Sediqullah Atal may be replaced by Ikram Alikhil, while Gulbadin Naib could come under scrutiny with Naveed Zadran ready to step in.
England Form
England’s wretched form continued with a five-wicket loss to Australia in Lahore last Saturday. That kept their NRR at minus 0.475 and was their fifth defeat in a row in ODIs.
The stakes are high here, as another loss would put England out of the group stages. They will hope for more fireworks from their batters, who posted 351 for 8 against Australia. Ben Duckett (165) was the star of the show, while Joe Root (68) displayed his usual industriousness.
The bowlers struggled for control or effectiveness, although they had Australia in trouble at 27 for 2 and 136 for 4. Five bowlers took one wicket each, with Adil Rashid (1 for 47) looking the most threatening.
England Team News
Brydon Carse is out of the tournament with a toe injury and Rehan Ahmed is added as a replacement. It could be Jamie Overton, however, who may replace him for this match. Phil Salt may feel the pinch from Tom Banton.

Verdict
England’s recent form has been poor, but there were signs against Australia that they were getting back to doing good things. Mark Wood and Jofra Archer may enjoy bouncing the Afghans out, while Adil Rashid remains a big threat. I am backing England to win here.
