Mumbai Indians have looked listless in their two matches, as they started another season with two defeats. Playing at this venue hasn’t proven to be an advantage, and even the Kolkata Knight Riders defeated them here last year. Will the Mumbai Indians be caught out once again?

  • Kolkata won 5 of their last 6 matches against Mumbai.
  • Mumbai lost 8 of their last 9 matches, stretching back to the last IPL.
  • Mumbai lost 3 of their last 4 matches played at the Wankhede Stadium.

Head to Head

This is a fixture that the Mumbai Indians completely dominated, winning 23 and losing only 11. That doesn’t tell the full story, as Kolkata won five of the last six matches played between these sides.

That included two wins last season, a 24-run win at this venue followed by an 18-run victory at the Eden Gardens.

Mumbai Indians Form

Mumbai Indians lost two in two, lending further credibility to their status as late starters. They lost by four wickets against the Chennai Super Kings away in Chennai. They were then defeated by the Gujarat Titans by 36 runs.

It is the batsmen who have let Mumbai down, as no individual MI batter has scored a 50 yet. The struggles of Rohit Sharma (eight runs) and Tilak Varma (SR 114.75) have pulled them down.

The bowlers have been equally guilty of non-performances, as Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Satyanarayana Raju have all conceded at more than 8.5 runs per over.

Mumbai Indians Team News

Satyanarayana Raju hasn’t delivered in the two matches and could see his spot under danger with Vignesh Puthur likely to come back into the side. Robin Minz’s utility could also be questioned with the youngster yet to deliver. Will they opt for Bevon Jacobs or Will Jacks and reshuffle the bowling pack?

Kolkata Knight Riders Form

The defending champions have one win and one loss from their first two matches and are still in the bottom half of the points tally. They were beaten by RCB at home by seven wickets but bounced back to land the Rajasthan Royals an eight-wicket drubbing.

Quinton de Kock (101 runs, SR 153.03) is already proving to be a shrewd addition at the top, although they would expect more runs from their vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer (six runs).

The bowlers have shared the workload, with Varun Chakaravarthy (three wickets, ER 7.50) finding his form in the second match. They still have concerns over Spencer Johnson (ER 11.52), who’s yet to hit the straps.

Kolkata Knight Riders Team News

Sunil Narine missed the last match due to a niggle, and his return could see a selection carousel. Moeen Ali did well with the ball last time out, and retaining him could see Johnson lose his spot.

Verdict

Mumbai Indians will have to find a quick way to rebound, especially having played on Friday night. Can they revive Wankhede memories of the old? Kolkata seem a bit more settled than their hosts, and for that reason I am backing the Knight Riders to win.
