Two new captains will be on view as Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants start their IPL 2025 campaign on Monday. This is match #4 of the season and will be played at the Dr Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, a neutral venue serving as Delhi’s home ground. The game is set to start at 7:30 pm IST.

These two teams were stacked close together last season when they finished outside the playoff spots. The off-season was all about rebooting, leaving all of us wondering which team out of Delhi and Lucknow has improved. I am taking my chances on Delhi and backing them for a win, simply because of LSG’s troubles with injuries.

There have been five matches in the IPL between the Delhi Capitals and the Lucknow Super Giants. Of these, three were won by Lucknow and only two by Delhi.

Interestingly, both wins for Delhi came last season, with the Capitals winning by six wickets in Lucknow and then winning by 19 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Delhi Capitals failed to qualify for the playoffs last year, finishing sixth in the league with 14 points. They were one of the four teams finishing on the same tally.

There are so many changes in the Delhi unit, with Axar Patel announced as new captain and Faf du Plessis as his deputy. Ricky Ponting has also departed, and Hemang Badani has been signed as his replacement in the dugout.

The Delhi fans will be excited about their bowling unit, with Mitchell Starc, T Natarajan, and Mohit Sharma added to their arsenal, while Kuldeep Yadav continues to be their lead spinner.

Delhi may play Starc, Tristan Stubbs, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Faf du Plessis as their overseas players. KL Rahul may be out of this contest due to family reasons, which could see Abishek Porel play as a keeper.

Lucknow Super Giants Form

Lucknow had the same points as Delhi last season but finished below due to an inferior run rate. After starting the season with three wins in the first four, they could never post back-to-back victories.

Rishabh Pant has been purchased for a record IPL price, as the Super Giants look to start afresh. David Miller, Aiden Markram, Abdul Samad, and Shahbaz Ahmed have all been added to give batting depth.

Questions remain over their bowling attack, as the Indian unit of Mohsin Khan, Avesh Khan, and Akash Deep are expected to shoulder bigger responsibilities after Mayank Yadav is set to miss a few games.

Mitchell Marsh will play as a pure batter, while Nicholas Pooran, Miller, and Markram are likely to be their overseas picks.

Starting the season with four defeats out of the first five matches proved to be too daunting last season for Delhi Capitals. A better start is definitely on the wish list as they come up against former captain Rishabh Pant, now helming Lucknow. I am backing the Delhi Capitals in this match that perhaps has very little to separate the teams.
