The two most successful teams in the history of the IPL will start their 2025 season on Sunday, as the Chennai Super Kings host the Mumbai Indians. This will be match #3 of this edition and will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with the match starting at 7:30 pm IST local time.

MS Dhoni continues to be the biggest influence for Chennai, even as Ruturaj Gaikwad looks to stamp his authority as captain.

Chennai may have to choose between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra for the opening slot. Sam Curran, Matheesha Pathirana, and Noor Ahmad could be the other overseas options.

Mumbai Indians Form

Mumbai finished at the bottom of the points standings with only eight points from four wins out of 14 matches. They started with three straight losses and could never recover from that.

The visitors will be without regular captain Hardik Pandya for this match as he remains suspended and Suryakumar Yadav will lead in his absence.

Another notable absence is Jasprit Bumrah, who is still rehabilitating from a back injury. Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar have been added to the auction and could be key to their chances here, and so will Mitchell Santner.

If there’s one thing that has remained a constant over the years in the IPL, it’s the Mumbai Indians’ poor starting record. They haven’t won their opening match of an IPL campaign since 2012! Even last year, they lost their first three matches of the season. Will that be the same this year? Playing arch-rivals Chennai in Chennai isn’t going to help, as the home team is stacked with a lot of spinners to make the best of local conditions. This could be another poor start for Mumbai, and I am putting my money on Chennai Super Kings winning here.
